COVID-19 is a disease that can affect a variety of organs and organ systems other than the lungs. These include the cardiovascular system, the kidneys, the liver and the central nervous system.

What does that mean in detail?
In addition to the disease itself, the necessary, sometimes very invasive therapy, such as prolonged ventilation or treatment in intensive care for several days, can also put a strain on the body and the psyche. Unfortunately, therefore, even after surviving COVID-19 disease, some patients may experience persistence as well as the appearance of various symptoms associated with COVID-19. This situation is referred to as post-COVID-19 or long-COVID-19.

The causes, the spectrum of the disease and the course are not yet sufficiently known. Those affected suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, persistent breathing difficulties, lack of resilience in everyday life, cardiovascular symptoms, psychological symptoms such as increased anxiety or depressed mood and are often no longer able to cope with their daily lives to the usual extent. Even in initially uncomplicated and milder courses of COVID-19, such symptoms may occur after the infection has been overcome.
